The vast majority of students who signed to the University of Minnesota Wednesday morning had committed for Glen Mason. One of the exceptions was Brewster's middle son, Clint, who did have a change of heart after his dad got the Gophers job. Clint Brewster, a quarterback, had verbally committed to Illinois, but took his official visit last weekend to the University of Minnesota. After that, he decided to come and play for his father at Minnesota. He signed his national letter of intent at Mullen High School in southwest Denver, Colo., and talked about why he is coming to Minnesota."We're really tight you know and at first, we wanted to go our separate ways you know and then we talked about it after he got the job and you know, we, we wanted to be together," Clint Brewster said.

Binghamton High hosts students from school in Peru

BINGHAMTON -- When Catherine Rodriguez left Lima, Peru, it was sunny with temperatures in the 90s -- perfect beach weather. When the 15-year-old high school student arrived in Binghamton, the temperature was in the teens and on its way to the single digits -- perfect frostbite weather. That's because, while it's winter here, it's summer in Peru. But Rodriguez was happy to be here, she said. Rodriguez is one of 12 students and two teachers from a private school in Lima who are braving the cold to spend two weeks of their summer vacation at Binghamton High School, sharing perceptions and perspectives with American students. "I hope to gain information about traditions and daily life here, and share information about my culture's daily life," Rodriguez said.

Facilities Foundation Purchases Land for Future High School

With the SCV Facilities Foundation and the Hart district finalizing arrangements for a huge chunk of Canyon Country property, many have spoken out over whether there truly is a need to buy so much space for a high school. The Facilities Foundation - a not-for-profit public benefit organization that acquires land and develops it on behalf of the William S. Hart Union High School District - had been eyeing approximately 250 acres of land in the vicinity of Sierra Highway and Vasquez Canyon Road for a future high school, which this week the foundation closed escrow on. Details of that purchase are not expected until Monday. "We're very pleased. A lot of people worked very hard," foundation president Rick Patterson said. That work will allow for the school district to get to work on building a school site there whenever the district is ready, rather than having to catch up when the expanding community will be in need of a facility.

Herpes outbreak pins high school wrestling

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - High school wrestling was suspended Tuesday across the state due to a widespread outbreak of a skin infection. The Minnesota State High School League said 24 cases of herpes gladiatorum have been reported by 10 teams. The virus is spread by skin-to-skin contact. Symptoms have included lesions on the face, head and neck of wrestlers. The league banned competitions and direct contact between wrestlers in practice until Tuesday, Feb. 6. Dr. B.J. Anderson, a former wrestler who acts as a health adviser to the league, said he didn't think an extension would be needed. "Our data shows with previous outbreaks that we've had, that an eight-day period of time would be appropriate to ... shut down any further outbreaks," Anderson said. The suspension is meant to control the current outbreak, allow time to diagnose new cases and prevent disqualifications at the state tournament, scheduled for Feb.

Experts, Lawmakers Struggle with High School Dropouts in Texas

One out of three Texas students don't graduate, and more students drop out than finish high school in the state's largest cities, according to education experts. Statewide, more than 2.5 million students have dropped out of Texas high schools in the last 20 years, and each graduating class loses about 120,000 students from freshman year to senior year, according to the San Antonio-based Intercultural Development Research Association. The research group says more than half of students in Texas' largest cities drop out. The dropout rate among blacks, Hispanics and low-income students is about 60 percent, according to the Center for Education at Rice University. The statewide dropout rate is about 33 percent - or 20 points higher than what the Texas Education Agency reports.

St. Louis Cardinals "Cardinals Logo" 3/8" Charm - Sterling Silver Jewelry

The image shown is representative, the item that will be shipped to you will be the same design but in Sterling Silver. School board members say building the school as quickly as possible is needed to ease overcrowding at Northwest Cabarrus High School, where enrollment is already greater than the 1,425-student capacity and expected to surpass 2,000 students by 2009. School officials will add 22 mobile units to Northwest Cabarrus over the next two years until the new high school opens in August 2009. Commissioners already gave Cabarrus County Schools $500,000 in October for architectural design fees, but a cash flow analysis performed by the system showed the money could be exhausted by May 20 amid the design development phase.

Hart District's Early College High School Shaping Up

The first early college high school in the Hart district is taking shape, and its purpose, mission and setting has become less of a hypothetical and more of a near-future reality, according to a demonstration given at a board meeting Wednesday night. The school is preparing to open its doors next fall with the goal of giving at-risk students and those who might never have considered going to college the chance to excel in higher learning. The school still doesn't have teachers or staff. There's no official name, desks, school colors or a mascot - things that the school's community is expected to provide feedback on. "We want to make sure we're setting our students up for success," principal Erum Jones said. To do that, the William S. Hart Union High School District will have to choose the right candidates, giving them the tools they need in the best environment possible, she said.

Carlsbad's vague plans for new high school

Carlsbad's New High School Task Force is seeking public feedback on its preliminary recommendations. Unfortunately, it appears what the group really wants is a blank check. The recommendations reflect the problem with most committees formed to resolve divisive issues. Throwing a bone to everyone leaves little for the impartial observer to chew on.The report is divided into two parts. The first is a list of considerations upon which the recommendations that follow are based. With no explanation of what sets them apart, we are left to conclude they are matters upon which committee members unanimously agree. The first two are no-brainers: the location of the school at College and Cannon and the assurance courses will be offered that meet university admission requirements. But the plan to offer "some specialized educational opportunities" is so vague it's meaningless, and the proposal to offer a variety of extracurricular activities, "but not necessarily the same as Carlsbad High School's," raises more questions than answers.

New rule allows high school athletes to receive rings

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - After Dakota High School's football and wrestling teams won their first state titles last year, Caleb Kraft's parents spent about $600 to buy championship rings for him and his twin brother. "There's the big trophy at the school, but this is something you can look back on 20 years from now and remember what you accomplished," said Kraft, a senior at Dakota, about 25 miles northwest of Rockford. His parents paid because, until this year, Illinois High School Association rules forbid schools to buy rings for athletes. This month, the IHSA voted 368-66 to change the rule. Beginning July 1, schools may furnish rings or another memento for players on title teams. Schools can use their own money, but officials say rings likely will be funded through booster clubs, businesses and other donors.

Fix It: Parking lot at Glasgow High School

PROBLEM: The Glasgow High parking lot and the driveways around the school are riddled with potholes. Police say the two teens were shot as they sat in a car in the parking lot at Western High School, which is about three miles west of downtown Las Vegas. Police say they are looking for a man in a car, and that the gunmen is not on campus. The injured teens were taken to a local hospital with wounds that authorities say do not appear to be life-threatening. Authorities say the shooting followed an altercation between two male students and at least one other person at a convenience store a few blocks from the campus. .

Three-sport athlete a vanishing species in high school sports

She is one of the best basketball players in the state, who committed early to Washington and also plays for the Spokane Stars, an elite regional team. The trend is hard to quantify, but several local high-school coaches, parents and athletic directors say three-sport, and even two-sport, athletes are becoming increasingly rare.

Two critics from the Pioneer Press went to see "High School ...

Two critics from the Pioneer Press went to see "High School Musical" at the Children's Theatre Company on Friday night. Grumpy Old Critic Man saw right through the show and rolled his eyes all the way through it. Sitting in the same seat, Populist Daddy Critic had a blast. For those childless folks who have missed the phenomenon of the monumentally successful Disney TV movie, the story is a Romeo and Juliet tale of Troy (a jock guy) and Gabriella (a brainy girl), who struggle to overcome high school cliques to perform in the school play. The stage version hews closely to the movie — there's an added character here, a couple extra songs there, and the Wildcats' team colors have mysteriously morphed into Minneapolis Washburn's orange and royal blue. The stage play is less nuanced, more obvious and more derivative than the movie version, which Grumpy Old Critic Man, frankly, would not have thought possible.

Bonsall petition drive in support of high school for rural ...

BONSALL -- The petition drive in search of signatures from voters who support the Bonsall Union School District pursuit of its first traditional high school is expected get back into high gear this weekend.Volunteers will pick up where they left off in October, gathering signatures from registered voters who live in the district in support of unification -- a necessary step in a lengthy process laid out by the State Department of Education. The springtime prom season in particular can be a whirlwind of visits to the beauty salon for hair and nail touch-ups, and endless visits to formal wear shops for that perfect dress. Those same dresses can be quite pricey - if you're willing to spend the money. But one high school group is doing its part to make the experience of buying that special dress more affordable, while at the same time giving back to the community. The Warner Robins High School Demon Dress Drive is under way and looking for a few good donations of gently-used formal and semi-formal wear. The dress drive will be held on Jan. 13 at the high school, and will give teenage girls in Houston County a chance to shop for that perfect outfit at a great price.

Prestigious Jerusalem high school opens its doors city-wide ...

A 95-percent pass rate in matriculation exams and a number of unique and prestigious programs have turned Jerusalem's Hebrew University High School, known by the Hebrew nickname "Leyada" into one of the best schools in Israel. But the argument over who has the right to go there has heated up recently between parents of the children at the elementary school in the adjacent neighborhood of Bet Hakeren, whose children used to be able to register there automatically and the Jerusalem municipality, which has decided to throw open registration city-wide. Sunday, the parents committee of the Bet Hakerem elementary school petitioned the High Court of Justice for an interim order to stop the change in conditions for registration, which will begin at the end of January. The parents' argument that the city hid its intentions from them is only one of the reasons for their opposition to the move.

High School Report: Oly Wins Yakima Tourney

YAKIMA -- The Olympic Trojans won the SunDome Mat Classic wrestling tournament Saturday, scoring 205.5 points to edge out second-place Mariner. It was late in the first half of Oakfield's game against Tuckahoe for the Class D title. Kirkum was hurt making a tackle. It didn't take long for the referee to send both teams to the sidelines, which never is a good sign. The game was delayed 20 minutes before Kirkum was wheeled off on a stretcher. Somebody said later they heard he was moving, but it didn't look good when we all stared out there in stunned silence. The thought of that scene should give you a hard reality smack to the mug and a reminder about what really is important, about what happens Monday morning and beyond. The board also approved student reassignment plans for new elementary schools scheduled to open next August. The new high school would relieve overcrowding at Northwest Cabarrus High, which could have more than 2,100 students in three years if nothing is done. But it has no space for more mobile units. "Because of the exploding growth in the northwest area, we need to get a new high school going right away," said Sam Masters, the school system's construction director. The board hopes to open a new high school by August 2009 and wants to get moving now, since the county is providing $600,000 up front for land and architect fees.

Our Own High School emerge champions

Dubai: Our Own High School, Al Warqa'a retained the overall championship trophy piling up 348 points in the 15th Our Own Inter School athletic meet for boys at the Dubai Police Stadium yesterday. He also made visits to Maryland, Oklahoma and Texas and had considered Memphis and Pitt, a school to which he made a verbal commitment at the end of his sophomore season. Pope is blessed with talent not seen in these parts for decades. His sinewy yet powerful 6-foot-9 frame gliding on the wing, dribbling toward the hole and then contorting to avoid contact and complete a layup is a thing of faultless beauty. That sight never gets old. People around the WPIAL need to realize the enormous basketball talent that Pope possesses, because it is just an extremely minute section of the populous that has such a God-given gift. Says Lopez, &#8220Dr. Lesney asked me to coordinate a Veterans Day breakfast. I thought that since we would have a wealth of living history walking in our doors, we could introduce them to the students."The event began with a breakfast served to the veterans by the student forum. At the end of the breakfast, about 200 guests and students from the senior class were invited to the auditorium for a special tribute that honored the veterans. As guests walked into the auditorium, sounds of patriotic songs being performed by the Sharps filled the room.

Lakewood Ranch High School events

The best of the best will compete Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) District 10 Finals competition. Last week, the Governors piled up more than 450 rushing yards, but the Central defense held the Pierre ground game to just 69 yards and no scores Tuesday. The Golden Eagles found some answers in the film of the first game. "After watching film, we saw the gaps they were running through," said Central linebacker and running back Eric Aas. "We just focused more on plugging those gaps and making them bounce that trap play to the outside." Central head coach Mike Flakus couldn't estimate how many hours his staff spent studying game film.

Jupiter High School traffic still jammed

Parents are joining students in their complaints about traffic backups on Military Trail that stifle the drive to Jupiter High School weekday mornings.
